AR-10 Upper Industry Definitions

Large-frame terminology isn't always consistent across the firearms industry. Terms such as complete upper, upper assembly, barreled upper, stripped upper, AR-10 and LR-308 can describe different products or receiver patterns depending on the manufacturer. The definitions below explain how these terms are generally used and how Ballistic Barn identifies its products.

AR-10 Upper / AR-10 Upper Receiver

A broad term for the upper portion of a large-frame AR-pattern rifle. Depending on context, it may refer to just the receiver or a fully assembled unit containing the receiver, barrel, handguard and related components. Because patterns vary, exact specs should always be reviewed.

Complete AR-10 Upper

This term is used differently across the industry. At Ballistic Barn, a complete configuration includes the assembled receiver, barrel, handguard and operating components, along with both a compatible bolt carrier group (BCG) and charging handle. Without both of those, we don't use this label.

AR-10 Upper Assembly

Generally refers to a large-frame receiver that's been built out with major components such as the barrel, gas system and handguard — but not necessarily a BCG or charging handle. Check the individual listing for included parts.

Barreled Upper

Typically a large-frame receiver with the barrel installed, and possibly the gas system, handguard and muzzle device. The term doesn't automatically indicate a BCG or charging handle is included.

Stripped Upper Receiver

The receiver body alone, without barrel, handguard, BCG, charging handle or other major components. Pattern and dimensions should be confirmed before selecting compatible parts.

Assembled Upper Receiver

Commonly refers to the receiver with smaller parts already installed. This doesn't necessarily mean the barrel, handguard, BCG or charging handle is included.

LR-308 / DPMS-Pattern Upper

LR-308 and DPMS-pattern are commonly used terms for large-frame receiver systems that differ in some dimensions and component relationships from other patterns. Handguards, barrel nuts, BCGs and other parts should be matched to the intended pattern.

Large-Frame AR Upper

A broad descriptive term for builds designed around cartridges and receiver systems bigger than the small-frame platform. AR-10s, LR-308s and other compatible large-frame products may fall under this general description.

Precision Builds

Suppressed Applications

8.6 Blackout is built around compact and suppressed use, and 308 Winchester can also be configured for a suppressor. Barrel length, muzzle threads, gas-system setup, ammunition and suppressor-mount compatibility should all factor into your choice.

Compact Large-Frame Options

Shorter configurations can reduce overall length and improve handling, but barrel length should be matched carefully to the cartridge and intended use. Recoil, muzzle blast, gas-system operation and ammunition performance should also be evaluated.
