20-Inch .223 Wylde vs. 22 ARC AR-15 Uppers: A Detailed Comparison

20-Inch .223 Wylde vs. 22 ARC AR-15 Uppers: A Detailed Comparison

Posted by Ballistic Barn on July 19, 2026

Various caliber ammunition rounds with 22 arc round for comparison

Updated: September 12, 2026

The classic 20-inch AR-15 upper remains one of the most popular precision configurations in the platform. It delivers maximum velocity from .223/5.56 cartridges and has dominated service rifle competition, varmint hunting, and long-range plinking for decades. Since Hornady introduced the 22 ARC in 2024, the cartridge has grown from a new high-performance option into a more established AR-15 chambering with a broader selection of factory ammunition. That leaves many shooters asking the same question: has the traditional 20-inch .223 Wylde finally met its match — or even been surpassed — in a same-length barrel?

This comparison pits two 20-inch barrel uppers head-to-head: the proven .223 Wylde chambering versus the newer 22 ARC. We'll examine ballistics, recoil, accuracy, ammunition availability, compatibility, and real-world use cases to determine which deserves a place in your safe in 2026.

Cartridge Basics

.223 Wylde The .223 Wylde chamber (not a cartridge, but a hybrid chamber design) safely and accurately shoots both commercial .223 Remington and military 5.56×45 NATO ammunition. A 20-inch .223 Wylde barrel with rifle-length gas typically achieves the highest velocities possible in an AR-15 with these cases.

22 ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge) Hornady's 22 ARC is based on the 6mm ARC case (itself derived from 6.5 Grendel) necked down to .224". It has ~17% more case capacity than .223 Rem and is specifically engineered to push long, high-BC .224 bullets (75–90 gr) at impressive velocities from AR-15 barrels. It runs at lower pressure (52,000 PSI max) than 5.56 NATO (62,000 PSI) and was optimized for 16–20-inch gas guns.

Important: 22 ARC requires a Type II bolt (6.5 Grendel/6mm ARC/22 ARC bolt face, .136" depth, .441" base). Most quality 22 ARC complete uppers ship with the correct BCG, but you cannot simply swap a 22 ARC upper onto a standard 5.56 bolt lower without changing the bolt.

Ballistic Performance from 20-Inch Barrels

Published manufacturer data and real-world results from shooters using 20-inch-class barrels continue to show the same basic performance relationship:

Load Muzzle Velocity (20") Velocity @ 500 yd Energy @ 500 yd Drop @ 500 yd (200 yd zero) 10 mph Wind Drift @ 500 yd
.223 Wylde – 77 gr Sierra TMK / Hornady ELD-M (BC ~.420–.467) 2,750–2,800 fps ~1,850–1,900 fps ~650–700 ft-lbs ~−44 to −48" ~28–32"
.223 Wylde – 80–88 gr ELD-M / Berger (BC ~.500) 2,600–2,650 fps ~1,800–1,850 fps ~700–750 ft-lbs ~−50 to −55" ~24–27"
22 ARC – Hornady 75 gr ELD Match (BC .467) 3,000–3,050 fps ~2,100–2,150 fps ~850–900 ft-lbs ~−36 to −38" ~22–24"
22 ARC – Hornady 88 gr ELD Match (BC .545) 2,900–2,950 fps* ~2,050–2,100 fps ~850–900 ft-lbs ~−38 to −40" ~19–21"

*Actual velocity varies with barrel, chamber, ammunition lot, atmospheric conditions, and other factors.

Key takeaways

  • The 22 ARC delivers 200–300 fps more velocity with 75–88 gr bullets than a .223 Wylde can achieve with bullets of the same weight.
  • At 500 yards, the 22 ARC carries ~200–250 ft-lbs more energy and drifts 6–10 inches less in a 10 mph crosswind than even the best .223/77–80 gr loads.
  • The advantage grows beyond 600 yards, where the higher ballistic coefficients and greater initial velocity of the 22 ARC become increasingly valuable.

In short: inside 300 yards the difference is small. From 400–800 yards the 22 ARC is noticeably superior — flatter, harder-hitting, and far more wind-resistant.

Recoil & Shootability

Both are very soft, but the 22 ARC has slightly more recoil.

  • Typical .223 Wylde 77 gr load in an 8.5–9 lb rifle → ~3.8–4.2 ft-lbs free recoil energy
  • 22 ARC 88 gr load → ~5.0–5.5 ft-lbs

The difference is noticeable when shooting prone or off bags for long strings, but most shooters call it negligible. Both are dramatically softer than 6mm ARC or 6.5 Grendel.

Accuracy & Barrel Life

Modern 20-inch .223 Wylde barrels (White Oak, Criterion, Krieger, SHAW BARRELS) routinely deliver excellent precision with quality match ammunition.

Current 22 ARC barrels from manufacturers such as Proof Research, Odin Works, Criterion, SHAW BARRELS and others have demonstrated that the cartridge is capable of excellent precision with factory match ammunition and properly assembled rifles.

Barrel life: .223 Wylde generally has an advantage because of its lower powder capacity relative to bore diameter. The 22 ARC is somewhat more overbore, but barrel life remains practical for the vast majority of hunting, varmint, recreational, and precision AR-15 users. Actual barrel life depends heavily on firing schedule, ammunition, barrel material, cleaning practices, and the accuracy standard the shooter considers acceptable.

Ammo Availability & Selection (Updated September 2026)

.223 Remington / 5.56 NATO

  • .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO continue to have the overwhelming advantage in ammunition availability. Shooters can choose from inexpensive training ammunition, hunting loads, match ammunition, defensive loads, and numerous bullet weights from a large number of manufacturers.
  • For shooters who fire large quantities of ammunition or want the easiest cartridge to find locally, .223/5.56 remains difficult to beat.

22 ARC

The 22 ARC ammunition situation has improved considerably since the cartridge's 2024 introduction. Hornady now lists five factory 22 ARC loads covering target shooting, varmint and predator hunting, and hunting applications:

  • 62 gr ELD-VT V-Match
  • 70 gr CX Superformance
  • 75 gr ELD Match Black
  • 80 gr ELD-X Precision Hunter
  • 88 gr ELD Match

That expanded selection is a meaningful improvement over the cartridge's early years, when shooters had only a few factory choices. Reloading support has also matured, with 22 ARC brass, dies, cartridge gauges, and suitable high-BC .224 bullets readily supported by Hornady and the broader reloading market.

The advantage still goes decisively to .223 Remington/5.56 NATO for overall availability, manufacturer selection, and inexpensive high-volume shooting. However, 22 ARC is no longer limited to just a couple of factory match loads, making it a much more practical choice in 2026 than it was immediately after launch.

Practical Applications

Choose the 20-inch .223 Wylde if you...

  • Shoot NRA/CMP Service Rifle or High Power competition
  • Want economical practice ammunition along with access to high-quality match loads
  • Already own multiple 5.56 bolts and magazines
  • Primarily shoot paper or steel inside 500–600 yards
  • Want maximum ammunition availability and compatibility

Choose the 20-inch 22 ARC if you...

  • Hunt predators, varmints, coyotes, or similar game at extended distances
  • Want maximum .22-caliber performance on steel from 600–1,000 yards
  • Want to take advantage of modern high-BC .224 bullets
  • Don't mind higher ammunition costs in exchange for a clear ballistic advantage beyond roughly 400 yards
  • Want an AR-15-compatible cartridge with more retained velocity and wind resistance than .223/5.56

Final Verdict

A 20-inch .223 Wylde upper is still one of the best all-around precision AR configurations available — economical to shoot, highly accurate, widely supported, and proven over decades.

The 20-inch 22 ARC, however, offers a clear ballistic advantage once distance increases. Its combination of higher velocity and modern high-BC .224 bullets produces flatter trajectories, better retained energy, and reduced wind drift while remaining compatible with the AR-15 platform.

If your shooting rarely exceeds 500 yards and you place a premium on ammunition cost, availability, and component commonality → .223 Wylde remains extremely difficult to beat.

If you want maximum .22-centerfire performance from the AR-15 platform — particularly for long-range steel, predator hunting, varmint shooting, or extended-range precision — the 22 ARC provides the stronger ballistic package.

The biggest change since this comparison was originally written is that choosing 22 ARC no longer means accepting such a narrow factory-ammunition selection. With more factory loads and mature reloading support available in 2026, the cartridge has become a considerably easier choice for shooters who can take advantage of its performance at distance.
